"...in this "new kind of war," the traditional divisions don't apply; there's no reason a vision of a world of greater peace and economic justice cannot be wed to what makes strategic sense. We should, in fact, demand it. "from "The Anti-War Movement's Challenge"

Congratulations to the City of Portland for rejecting the request of US Attorney General John D Ashcroft that the Portland Police interview foreign citizens not suspected of any crimes. "You can't use personnel and equipment just to go out and randomly interview people solely on immigration," said Andrew Kirkland, an assistant police chief. Portland is the first police department to refuse to co-operate with the Attorney General's request.

Speech by Linda Burnham The US impulse to "rule and rule without end, forever and ever" (The phrase is W.E.B. DuBois') is not an impulse to dominance simply for its own sake, but dominance for the sake of the protection of wealth -- wealth already stolen and wealth anticipated.

THE BUSH DOCTRINE: 2, 3, MANY MORE WARS By Jack A. Smith
"Number one on the conservative agenda is for the U.S. empire to continue striking back at countries throughout the world long after the government of Afghanistan has been dispatched--regardless of whether they had any connection to the September tragedy." 12/1

The Kingston Antiwar Rally and The U.S. Movement Against the Afghanistan War by Jack Smith, MidHudson National People's Campaign
"...the left movements which immediately took to the streets in protest have a far more developed political critique of the Afghanistan government than the Bush administration, the pro-war majority or vacillating liberalism " 11/3/2001

Evil Evildoers Of Evil How to Feel Calmly Patriotic and Yet Not the Slightest Bit Reassured by Bush & Co. By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist
"Pro-America does not mean pro-war. Or pro-Bush. Or anti-Afghanistan. Or pro-little-flags-on-SUV-antennas. It means thinking independently and getting better informed and filtering your news very carefully and realizing that just because one version of the American aggro attitude is currently being ramrodded down society's throat doesn't mean you have to swallow. "

How not to win a war, The Guardian "If the US cannot do better than this, it had better stop and think again - for the sake of the Afghan people, for the sake of peacemaking diplomacy and relations with the Muslim world and for the sake of allies who require a wiser leadership." 11/3/2001

Hearts and Minds: Avoiding a New Cold War by Rahul Mahajan and Robert Jensen "The single most common question antiwar activists are confronted with is, "What's your solution?" So, what should those who see the futility of the current military strategy be calling for?"

On the War by Stanley Hoffman
"If ours is the cause of humanity, if terrorism against civilians is something that threatens everyone, if security from terror attacks is a universal public good, we should behave not as a country that seeks revenge for what it has endured, and has the power to twist arms throughout the world, but as a country that seeks a broad mandate by accepting the norms and constraints of international law."

The Taliban's Bravest Opponents by Janelle Brown
"We condemn the cooperation of the United States with the Northern Alliance. This is another nightmare for our people -- the Northern Alliance are the second Taliban. "

RAWA statement on the terrorist attacks in the US
Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan
"If it is established that the suspects of the terrorist attacks are outside the US, our constant claim that fundamentalist terrorists would devour their creators, is proved once more. The US government should consider the root cause of this terrible event."

No Glory in Unjust War on the Weak by Barbara Kingsolver
"It is not naive to propose alternatives to war. We could be the kindest nation on Earth, inside and out. I look at the bigger picture and see that many nations with fewer resources than ours have found solutions to problems that seem to baffle us."

Interfaith Statement National Council of Churches
"September 20, 2001 – The Interfaith Statement “Deny Them Their Victory: A Religious Response to Terrorism” was delivered today to every Congressional office and to the White House. Now numbering nearly 1,500, a broad spectrum of the U.S. religious community, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist leaders, have joined their signatures to the statement."

Unrighteous Reverends by NPR's Scott Simon
" I really don't want to be critical of anyone during a national crisis, especially people who are sources of spiritual guidance to millions of Americans. But sometimes the Reverends Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson say something so staggering, they renew your capacity to be shocked, amen, even in a shocking time."

The Anti-War Movement's Challenge Geov Parrish
